Wednesday 7th March 2018 7.45pm KO

Caton United lost 3-1 on penalties last night to Winstanley St. Aidans.
Caton did not play well in the first half but still denied the free scoring Winstanley side many chances. The first half ended 0-0. The second half was only a few minutes old when Winstanley took the lead. Caton fought back and equalised through Sam Kirkby. Winstanley then went in front again only for John Beckwith to equalise. Caton then equalised again to make it 2-2. Substitute Alex Hartley then put Caton into a deserved lead to make it 3-2. With just two minutes of the 90 still to play Winstanley scored a lucky equaliser when a shot from the edge of the area was covered by the keeper only for the ball to hit a defenders foot and deflect away from the keeper and hit the other post and drop over the line. In the last minute of stoppage time Caton had a great chance to win the game when the forward was in a one on one situation with the keeper, but instead of trying to go round the keeper he decided to shoot but the keeper parried the ball away.

The penalty shootout which has seen Caton win twice in this competition deserted them this time. Winstanley missed its first two penalties and Caton missed one of its first two. Winstanley went on to win 3-1. Jimmy Marshall said he was gutted to lose a game they should have won, even the Winstanley manager said his team was lucky. Winstanley who are unbeaten for the last two years sit on top of the Wigan and District League and are beating teams by 5 and 6 goals most weeks.

Jimmy Marshall would like to thank the large number of people from the North Lancashire League who travelled to Bamber Bridge and gave his side a lot of encouragement. He said he was proud of his team and supporters.
